In Salcedo, as in almost all places, carnivals were banned in 1936. In 1983 it began to recover based on existing documentation, and since 1991 is celebrated every year, thanks to the selfless work of the "Amigos de Salcedo" Cultural Association. The party starts in the square, when the Porretero - main character of the carnival- steals a chicken from a small coop installed in the square. He runs with the chicken, while being persecuted by the other carnival characters and children, and gets hide in the clock tower. Soon he will be discovered and imprisoned. The doll Porretero is tied to a tree in the square and is beaten by all the participants while they dance around a fire celebrating the arrest. They take the Porretero and show it house by house accompanied with music played by Gesaltza Fanfarre and lit by torches. Finally, the Porretero is tried and found guilty of all the calamities occurred in Salcedo throughout the year, so it's bound to be thrown into a roof.
