Mendive - The old sawmill

This place - nowadays just a field where a few cows eat grass beside a handball court that seems to be in the middle of nowhere - used to be the old sawmill of Mendive. During the Second World War, the mill - who led the Belgian businessman Charles Schepens - was an important site for the resistance in the Basque Country. An important crossing path to Spain, often from Valcarlos-Luzaide. Photo: Julia Gallego Ronda
