Recorded during the Easter Christian celebration of Good Friday in the Cathedral Santa Maria La Real of Pamplona (XV c.). Following a lost and recovered tradition, during the three days in which according to Christian tradition Jesus Christ lies, the bells of the church don’t chime, and the Matraca rattle makes the calls for praying. Until the 50′s the characteristic sound of the Matraca was accompanied with small rattles that parishioners honked as a metaphor of teh Tenebrae. Currently, nobody plays rattles anymore, but the Matraca keeps its role call.
Special thanks to the Campaneros de la Catedral de Pamplona.
