How to use
The web MAP is very easy to use. The left window uses Google maps to show and locate the sounds on the map. If you click on the signs, you can consult, listen and download a sound recording made in that place.
By the way, if you wish to search for a specific sound you can use the search function, the categories also should be helpful for this task and finally you also can access to the sounds by families using post-inserted tags.
If you wish to participate, just click this link and follow the instructions. In a question of minutes the recording will show-up on the map.
The site works with most web browsers but we strongly recommend to use Mozilla Firefox.
Participate
You can participate in SOINUMAPA!
It’s very easy, just choose the recordings you want to share and follow the instructions below. Remember, we only accept recordings made in the basque country and surroundings, so any other recording will not be included on the map (there are other maps around the world, take a look on links ection). The recorded sounds can be of any kind, source, quality and duration, but always representative of the place where happened originally.
There are 3 ways of adding your sounds to the map:
>> ONLINE (recommended)
Just click this link and follow the instructions. Your files has to be in mp3 format. The system is easy and felxible, so in just a few minutes you will find the recording on the map.
>> EMAIL
Send us your recording and some related information Manda tu grabación y cierta información relacionada (title, localization, author, short description) to audiolab.arteleku@gmail.com. As soon as we get the recording we will contact you.
>> POST SERVICE
You also can send us your recordings by post (in a CD + related information) to this adress:
ARTELEKU-AUDIOLAB / Kristobaldegi 14, Loiola auzoa, 20014 DONOSTIA-SAN SEBASTIAN
As soon as we receive the recording, we will include it on the map.
The management team of this website keeps the right to edit the contents of the website. The aim of this right is not to control a censorship but to show the contents in the best way possible. As an example, this team will translate all the information to basque, english, spanish and maybe some other languages in the future. In any case if you have any doubt or suggestion please contact us.
Thanks for participating!
Projects
SOINUMAPA has served and serves also as a starting point for various side projects. As we understand, the map more than a final goal is a starting point for new projects. At least, this is the way we would like to be both for those who actively participate on the map and for any other user.
In this regard, in recent years, new projects in which many artists have participated has been created following SOINUMAPA. Here are some of them:
>> RE:MAPA (2004-2006)
DOWNLOAD RE:MAPA net album (MP3)
An exercise in reinterpretation understood as a reflection on the possible relationships between the original recordings that make up the map, the places where they were taken and memory. 30 experimental sound artists and musicians of the Basque Country took these recordings and musically reinterpreted in a kind of remix exercise. The list of participants includes: Oier Iruretagoiena, Alex Mendizabal, Mursego, Iban Urizar, Alex Mendizabal, Mattin, Tzesne, Paralux, Johannes Buff, Xedh …
>> HOTS! Radio Paisaje Sonoro (2007-…)
www.hots-radio.info

The list of participants includes: Francisco Lopez, Oswaldo Macia, Xabier Erkizia, Oier Iruretagoiena, Iñigo Telletxea …
>> SATURNIA SOUND MAP (2010)

About
SOINU MAPA is an online open collaborative project. Based on “phonography” or the art of recording environmental sounds, our aim is to show, share and exchange field recordings made in the Basque Country. Here, you will find several sound recordings, that tell us a little bit more about the different sonic realities of the Basque country.
If you also like to record sounds and want to share your work with us, just participate uploading your recordings.
In order to distribute them freely, all recordings are licensed under Creative Commons.
SOINU MAPA was born in 2005 at Audiolab, the sound department of Arteleku contemporary art center from Donostia-San Sebastián. From the very begining has been directed by Xabier Erkizia with the great support of Oier Iruretagoiena, Xavier Balderas, Luz Maria Sanchez and Enrike Hurtado, without whom wouldn’t be possible to keep this project alive. Nowadays is directed by a group of editors that are working as a collective.
